SAN JACINTO MONUMENT AND MUSEUM, SPACE CENTER HOUSTON, TEXAS ICE STADIUM Clear Lake is a major destination, not just for Texans but for tourists from all over the globe. Space Center Houston is the premier showcase of America's accomplishments in space, and features hands-on, interactive exhibits that entertain, educate, and inspire. The Johnson Space Center, with its awesome assortment of spent space vehicles resting on the large, grassy front lawn, is recognized worldwide. NASA tours from Space Center Houston will give visitors the experience of Mission Control in action, viewing films of historic launches and landings, and gaining an understanding of what life in space is like. Because of the area's mild climate, Clear Lake residents and visitors enjoy recreational and leisure activities yearlong. Lush golf courses, boating and water sports and nature trails abound. The Armand Bayou Nature Center is America's largest urban wildlife preserve, protecting more than 360 animal species and encompassing three ecosystems. The Center also encompasses the upper portion of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. If you're a seafood lover, Clear Lake is clearly the place for you. Whether you like to catch your own or let someone else do it for you, you're never more than a few minutes away from a quality seafood dining experience. For all kinds of cuisine, from Indian to Cajun to traditional American, Clear Lake is the place to find it. Fresh seafood shops can be found on the Seabrook Waterfront. Hundreds of antique, craft and gift shops welcome visitors to buy or browse through often one-of-a-kind items of interest. Near the waterfront, Old Seabrook visitors enjoy dozens of interesting shops and cozy tearooms, all within walking distance of one another. The second Saturday of each month Seabrook has a "Back Bay Market" with enticing and unusual merchandise. Across the bridge in Kemah, many more shops within view of water offer items ranging from rare paintings to local handcrafts and nautical antiques. The new attraction called the "Kemah Boardwalk" nestles along the channel and the Galveston Bay coast. Shops, restaurants, rides, fountains, gardens and the "Aquarium Restaurant" bring in over three million visitors a year to this enchanted area. Both Seabrook 8r Kemah have bed-and-breakfast accommodations. Only five minutes away, Historic Main Street in League City, lined with oak trees more than 100 years old, offers a tea room and many specialty shops. The City of Webster with its "Restaurant Trail" offers an electric variety of restaurants, along with its many shopping districts. Webster is known as "Webster Getaway." The City of Nassau Bay features the arts and is home to the Arts Alliance Center of Clear Lake, the Clear Creek Country Theater and the Clear Lake Symphony. At Gulf Greyhound Park, the world's largest and most successful greyhound racing complex, (just south of Clear Lake) the fast-paced action runs all year, rain or shine, with air-conditioned comfort on all four levels. This unique entertainment offers the thrill of greyhound racing and the excitement of pari-mutuel wagering (for those 21 and older). Fine restaurants and waterfront clubs on the shores of Clear Lake and the docks of Galveston Bay offer an outstanding variety of foods: seafood and steaks, as well as Mexican, Italian, German, Cajun and Oriental cuisine. Boat watching, while dining at the restaurants along the channel, is fun. You can also buy your own fresh seafood from nearby markets. ARMAND BAYOU NATURE CENTER................... The largest urban wildlife and wilderness preserve in the U.S. offers weekend tours, exhibits and walking paths for ecotourism enthusiasts. Over 2,500 acres of bayou, forest and prairie are refuge for more than 360 species of animals and birds. (281) 479-2431 Adjacent to the San Jacinto Battleground and Monument. Commissioned in 1914, the ship is the last of the World War I era dreadnoughts and the only surviving combat ship to have served in both World Wars. Self-guided tours 10AM-5PM daily. BAYOU WILDLIFE PARK ................... (281) 337-6376 Just south of Clear Lake; exit FM 517 off I-45 South; go west 6 miles. See and feed animals and birds from Africa, Asia, Australia and South America. An adventure-filled tram ride takes you over 86 acres of natural habitat. GULF GREYHOUND PARK................... (800) 275-2946 Ten minutes south of Clear Lake. Exit 15 at FM 2004 off I-45 South. The world's largest greyhound racing park, a 4level complex, offers clubhouse seating for 1,900. Top-rated dogs in the United States. FamiTies welcome; full service dining. Dog adoption service. Evening races Tuesday through Sunday. Matinees Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Stroll and shop under huge oak trees for gifts, antiques, books & collectibles. The 1898 restored West Bay Common School, restored historic homes, quaint tearooms, a delightful park and Helen's Garden beckon you. KEMAH WATERFRONT DISTRICT................... (281) 538-4165 Off Hwy. 146, turn on 6th St. in Kemah. Visit unique area shops, galleries and restaurants. Don't miss Clear Lake's newest attraction, the "Kemah Boardwalk". Overlooking the beauty of upper Galveston Bay, the Kemah Boardwalk has a dynamic collection of themed restaurants, featuring the Aquarium restaurant, retail shops, a first class hotel, water gardens and amusements for the whole family, all linked by a boardwalk and major pedestrian corridor which circulates through the complex. Visit the new interactive exhibit center for Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. Theater, kiosks, memorabilia. Catch one of Nolan's fast balls! OLD SEABROOK ................... (281) 474-3869 Off NASA Road 1 and Highway 146, Seabrook. Stroll among antique and specialty shops. Enjoy restaurants in this quaint shopping district near Galveston Bay. Continue north and south on Todville Road for bird watching, parks, and more restaurants. Visit "Back Bay Market," an open air market, 2nd Saturday and Sunday monthly. SAN JACINTO MONUMENT AND MUSEUM ................... (281) 479-2421 Just north of Clear Lake; north on Highway 146, west on Highway 225, north on Highway 134 (Battleground Road). Site of the battle that won Texas' independence from Mexico in 1836. This towering monument, the world's largest masonry structure, invites visitors to learn about the events that shaped Texas history. Visit the exhibition hall and theater.
